Stair lifts: Is one right for you?

Stair lifts are amazing. They can safely transport you or your loved ones up and down one of the biggest barriers in your home. Deciding to stay in your house as you age can be a difficult decision. Weighing the options between assisted living and a home that you know and love can be heart wrenching. Educating yourself on the many products that are on the market to help you age in place is crucial if you do decide that your home is where you want to stay. Stair lifts are one of the main products that give you the ability to do just that! Even if you live in a ranch it’s likely that you have basement stairs to access a laundry room or family room.

A stairway with 2 straight rails and a landing

There are many different stair lift options out there. Most have similar basic features. There are a few main features that we like to see in a stair lift. The first feature is a battery operated motor because it will still function in a power outage. No one wants to be trapped on one floor during a power outage especially if it lasts more than a few hours! Another feature we prefer to see in a stair lift is a seat that swivels. This makes it a lot safer and easier to transfer on and off the lift.  We also like to see a fold away seat and footrest. This feature is more for the people who do not need the stair lift rather than the people who do. Stairs can be quite narrow and you don’t want people struggling to squeak past the stair lift to use the stairs.

Curved rail Stair lift

There are a few different types of rails that the stair lifts use to configure to your stairs. Most homes have just a straight run to their second floor or basement. Some have a landing halfway up. A straight rail should work in both of these instances but requires a person to transfer from one lift to another on the landing if there is one. When a stairway has more than one landing or the person using the stair lift can’t easily transfer from one lift to another, the best option for them might be one of the curved rail systems that are on the market.  These systems are great and can fit any stairway configuration.

The other consideration when buying a stair lift is cost. Residential Safety Services, Inc. is a family owned and operated small business and carries several different quality brands of stair lift to cover a range of needs. We ONLY carry brands we believe in! The main thought in cost though: is it more economical to invest in a stair lift or to move to an independent living facility or different house? I would think that the stair lift would win every single time.
